How To Get More Followers On HubPages
One of the most asked questions in the forums seems to be: "How Do I Get More Followers?". I've seen this asked in the questions section and forums multiple times during my short time here.
I have only been here 1 month as I write this. When I hit the publish button on this hub, this will make my 8th hub. I currently have 19 followers. So while I'm far from an expert on this topic, I have not done bad either I would like to think.
Update: After 2 months I have published 13 hubs and I now have 72 followers. Good content seems to be the key here.
When I first came here I really doubted my writing abilities and was pleasantly surprised when I started getting followers. English grammar has always been a major weakness of mine. Thank God for Google Chrome's built in spell checker.
Ok back to the main subject here: How To Get More Followers On HubPages.
If other hubbers are going to follow you, they must first be able to find you. So get out there and mingle so you can be found!
I have some great ways for you to be more visible are really very easy to accomplish. So follow me down the road to getting more followers on Hub Pages.
Update Your Profile
If your a new user or have not done the following things then you should. Upload a profile picture. Edit your profile page and tell the world a little something about you so others can get to know you better.
When people come to check you out you really do not want to have a blank page and the default picture.
Follow Other Users
When you follow other users there is a chance that they will follow you back. Some users will follow back most everyone who follows them. Others have their own criteria they use to decide if they will reciprocate or not.
I suggest following other users who write about topics you are actually interested in and would want to read and not following someone just because they may reciprocate.
Personally I take a look at their profile page. What is their author score? If its very low, and they are not new, then this indicates to me they are not really putting much effort into being a good writer on HubPages. I'm likely to pass.
On the other hand if they have a very high Author score I'm likely to follow them even if I could care less about the topics they cover. This is because they are the best of the best and I wish to emulate them. I will learn what makes them tick by studying their writing style, layout and topics they cover that work.
Next I skim over their Hub Titles to see if any of the topics they write about interest me. So by writing about topics that have mass appeal you are increasing your odds of getting more followers.

Leave Comments On Hubs
Now that your following some other users. Go read some of their hubs. Pick out topics that interest you, or hubs by some of the HP all stars. Then actually read them. You will probably learn something you didn't know before.
By having read the hub you will be able to leave an intelligent comment. Maybe you will point out which aspect of the hub you liked most. When appropriate you can leave your opinion about the topic at hand. Or maybe make a suggestion about an angle the author never thought of.
If all your going to say is "Great Hub", then don't even bother leaving a comment at all. Your hurting yourself more than helping. It is probably a good idea to not overdo the comments. If you comment on each and every hub a person publishes you may be seen in a negative light.
Many other authors moderate their comments. So if your comments basically suck they are not likely to approve them.
Other hubbers actually read the comments and by leaving intelligent comments you are becoming more visible. Some will come check out your profile and hubs, especially if they like your comments. Maybe even follow you.
When others directly respond to you and your comments be sure to answer them back when appropiate.
Leave Comments on The Forums
If your new to HubPages and have questions, the forums are a great place to get help. It will also increase your visibility. You can leave comments on threads you find interesting.
I mostly use our forums to either ask a question or answer others if I know the answer. I have never liked forums very much, any forums, not just the HP forums.
A word of caution. It seems some users tend to get a bit carried away in the "Politics" and "Religion" threads. Some users always like to push other peoples buttons just to see how they will react. You may wish to avoid them if your easily upset.
There is one thread where you can pick a hub from the last poster and write a short sentence or two about it while leaving a link to it. The next poster will do the same thing with one of your hubs. I'm sure I have got several new followers and great comments on my hubs from the Recommend another hubbers hub thread. I post in this thread ever so often. It is also a great way to find new hubbers and hubs you have not read yet.
Since you are posting there hoping others read your hub its only fair for you to do the same in return. Play nice and we all win.
Don't get so caught up with the forums that you never write any hubs.

Ask Questions
Another way to gain some visibility is to ask questions in the Question and Answers section of the web site. Ask thought provoking, intelligent questions and you may gain a new follower or two besides getting your inquiry answered.
Answer Questions
Only answer a question if your pretty sure you know the right answer. Now if the question is seeking an opinion then its fair game for all. Either way leave something intelligent as a response, you may very well impress someone so much they become your newest follower.
This is how I got my second follower, by leaving an answer that the asker really liked.
When I was learning how to clean carpets a coworker said to me concerning up-selling the customer. "Impress them with your brillance, or dazzle them with BS"
In my opinion ... Many people will see right through BS, so make sure you know of what you speak.
Leave a Comment on the Official HubPages Blog
If the topic interests you and you can add something of value to the discussion, then leave a comment. If you have nothing of real value to add, then go your merry way.
Put Your Best Foot Forward
Present yourself in the best possible light and you will garner respect from others. Constantly curse, argue in the forums, and always come across as being negative and no one will want to read what you have to say. Much less follow you.
Treat HubPages like a business even if you could care less if you make a dime here. Acting in a professional manner, while being kind and helpful to others, will make a world of difference in how others perceive you.
Write High Quality Unique Content
While doing all the things I have listed can get people to come check you out, you need to have something for them to come 'Check Out'.
In the Search Engine Optimization world there is an old saying, "Content Is King". Everything comes down to having high quality, unique content. Put a lot of effort into making your hubs the best they can be, and you will naturally attract a following. As a side benefit you may also attract one way links to your hubs. These are the most valuable of all kinds of incoming links, and they are to die for if you wish to do well in the search engines.
When others leave you comments on your hubs respond back to the comments directed at you. Answer any questions asked of you. Thank users for any compliments they paid you and for taking the time to read your hub. Make the comments section an interactive forum for your hub.
Read your followers Hubs
They take time out of their busy days to read your hubs, so it is a common courtesy to do the same in return. You will be helping out those who help you. When you leave comments, rate up their hubs and occasionally even bookmark those hubs you really love you are giving back. You probably will even gain some new friends along the way.
Usually I get that HubPages email that tells me the newly published hubs from those I follow first thing in the morning. This is a good time to go and read a few while your waking up.You will probably learn something new. Ideas for new hubs can be found this way too. All of which will help you in the long run.

How Not to Get More Followers
Now that I have covered what works I think it prudent to also share ways you may shoot yourself in the foot.
What Not To Do
- Do not become a comment spam machine. If all your doing is spamming Hub comments, the forums and the blog your likely to upset other users, ruin your reputation here and possibly even get banned.
- Do not leave links to your hubs in other peoples comments. it is considered to be in bad taste. While you may occasionally get away with this if your hub aligns closely with the topic, you could also lose respect and followers.
- Do not post links to your hubs in the Forums either. With the exception of a couple of threads in the forums, this is not allowed. You can get banned from the forums for doing this.
- Excessive cursing is against the rules and will probably turn off some other users. I really would discourage you from cursing at all in your hubs. It just does not look professional!
- Do not break any of HubPages.com's rules. Getting your account banned will really screw up your day and follower count. I do not think a follow count of 0 was your initial goal, was it?
- Do not publish hubs without first proofreading and correcting all spelling and grammar mistakes.
- Do not become a Fan Spammer!
- Don't overly obsess over getting more Followers. For one its the Search Engine Traffic that will make you any real money, not your fellow hubbers. If you come across as desperate, others will notice this and possibly get turned off by it.

Hi MyWebs, It's not so much a disagreement really, just a personal preference. I have dipped my toes into the forums and find them not to my taste. I know that there are some great things happening in there, but overall I find it uncomfortable, not to my taste.
I do know that you get more notice - and probably more traffic to your hubs if you participate.
So, like I said, not so much a disagreement as a matter of preference.
Yes as I said I don't care much for the forums either, any forums. But it is a good way to be seen. Thanks for clarifying what you meant.

Thanks again. I do find myself not wanting to be rude by not commenting on followers hubs but once you get over a hundred it can get time consuming. Good as so many of the hubs are you just cannot read them all. It really could take me all day especially when dealing with mountains of email as well. I tend to pick and choose based on title and time available and keep my fingers crossed that people do not take offence at being missed.
Yes Peter I know what you mean. I only have 42 followers so far, which seems like a lot to me. I do appreciate each and every one of them. I'm sure I could spend all day reading and commenting on hubs too.
We all have this problem. This hub was more meant for new users to help them get off to a good start. Hopefully I didn't help to create any new HP spam machines.
I don't think no one expects anyone to comment on all of their hubs. I do as you do, I pick and choose the topics that interest me the most. Then I try and leave a comment if I have something useful to say. Thanks for your comments.
I was always wondering how other people get so many followers if they have not been on Hubpages for so long or if they have had just a few hubs. I used most of the methods you described but I think reading other hubbers´ hubs and leaving a ´´useful´´ comment is the best one. It is only fair to read other hubs if you want yours to be read. Sometimes I like a certain hub but I find myself out of words to leave a comment so I guess it is better to skip from time to time. This hub deserves ´´a follow.´´

I do not follow back everyone who follows me. Some people do always reciprocate, not me. I pick those who write about topics I like mostly. Or those with a very high author score since they are the ones most likely making money on here and I wish to learn from them.
I do always come check out those who follow me to see if I'm interested or not in your topics. Then again I do this often for those who leave me comments too.
I've noticed a connection betweent the number of Hubs You are watching and the number of visits at Your own pages. Your personal score depends on it.
I'm a 6 week old hubber and only have 20 or so followers... I deciding I would figure out how to get more followers and came across your hub. Thanks for the great information as it has been a huge help!
Dmitry in my opinion your author score depends more on external traffic, traffic that does not come from hubpages, than anything else. Leaving comments on other hubs will often get you more visits to your hubs.

I especially agree that grammar and spelling should be checked. Even if I am interested in the topic of a hub, I won't finish reading it, if it is riddled with spelling or grammatical mistakes. It doesn't take that long to look up a word in the dictionary or even in Google using 'definition: word' as the search criteria. Good work!

I agree with you regaurding to follow or not to follow,..sure it might be the nice thing to do, follow everyone who follows you however the problem with doing that for me anyways is, when I get the new hubs published list via email,. some of my favorite hubbers might get kind of loss among the ones im not really intrested in,..kind of like my twitter, so I pick and choose between the ones I decide to follow. Another good point you discussed was how it is how important to take time out to visit other peoples hubs,..for me personally,..I have been bad about that lately due to limited time available, but the work load is letting up some now, so i have a lot of reading to do,..LOL. Ahh,.. I miss that too. Awesome hub !!!!

My Twitter is a lost cause as I follow everyone there hoping they may click my links. Yes its hard to keep up reading everyones hubs. I stick to a couple of sections of our forums here and mostly avoid the rest. Forums are good for exposure here on HubPages, but search engine traffic is what really matters money wise. Thanks for your comment.

For those of you who are using hubpages as an additional (or primary for the lucky few) source of income do you find that having tons of followers is really essential?
If you ask me I think you have shared a wonderful info about getting followers. I'm new here and I will definitely do all the things you advised because I need followers.

procurar this isn't Twitter and most people don't use it like that. If you follow me I most likely will give your hubs a look and if several of them cover topics that interest me then I will follow you. But you following me has nothing to do with if I follow you back. Its just that I'm more likely to come check out your writing. I think the majority of hubbers are like me in this regard.
What would you rather have: 1,000 fake followers with very few of them reading your hubs OR 100 dedicated followers who often read your hubs and leave insightful comments, rate up your hubs and maybe show them some link love on the social networking sites?

I don't mean to beat up on you here, but it seems you have missed the point of followers on HubPages.

Now I notice after my last comment to procurar that he went and removed all his hubs or an admin removed them. Looking at his hubtivity I see all he was doing was leaving comments everywhere the same as here.
I suppose when that didn't work out he gave up and quit HP. I hope I wasn't the reason he quit, but it does seem he was approaching HP the wrong way. Like the comment spam for instance.
If a user writes good high quality hubs the followers will come naturally. If your whole reason to be here is to get followers then you should leave and go to Twitter or FaceBook. This is a place for writers, not a popularity contest. Friends come naturally here. :)
I found your hub first page in Yahoo. Very good hub and I can tell you put a great deal of work and effort into it and it answered a question I was actively trying to find answers too.

all very true statements, I think that hubpages is like any other community, you have to introduce yourself. So like you said the best way to do that is to get out there and comment on other peoples hubs and not to forget about the people that comment on yours.

@ambee12 I've been on HP about 7 months long than you have, but I was afk 4 long months. Regardless it doesn't matter so much how many followers you have so much as attracting quality followers and friends. I'll take 1 good follower over 10 fakes any day. Now that I'm active again things are picking back up again.

Great advice, you are right about not getting the bulk of your hub traffic from hubbers. The main traffic source will be from search engines, most notably Google.
Thank you for your hub about getting followers. I am not entirely new in HP but I only get to write every now and then. Would also want to get followers that is why I decided to search for a hub about it, luckily I found your hub about it. And realized that your first point, updating profile, hit me immediately as I haven't done it yet. You Did Do A Good Job On This Hub. I Just Started A Ccouple Weeks Ago And Other Than The 100 views on my 3 hubs i have i only have 1 follower. so hopefully this will get me some more followers. so u have any suggestions on what material i should write about that would be useful?

Interesting hub, thanks. I am kind of in 2 minds about the follower numbers - I feel my numbers are low but then I have been publishing quite a few hubs in the lats couple of months so maybe they will catch up. But on the other hand does that mean my hubs are not interesting to people?! Howver, you have slightly set my mind at ease as I was of the mindset of your last bullet point about the fact that followers don't actually earn you money. Much as I love the fact that people are interested in what I write about and I follow a fair few people for the same reason, at the end of the day my prime focus is to get the organic traffic that will produce income. Having said that I do like browsing the forums and questions and find the whole community a bit addictive so am enjoying being a part of hubpages :-)

Hi MyWebs, I've been figuring this out recently for I just joined HubPages. Sure, I want to gain followers, but want the ones who will be interested in my hubs, not because I followed them. As a new hubber, I voted for this, for this really helped me.

This was a great article, especially since you say that you are new to this business. I wish someone could explain to me how to add the buttons that appear underneath the profile picture: vote ... follow ... be my friend .. etc. Do you know how I can get those buttons added to my profile? Please respond: I'm desperate now.

@Carolyn A. Ridge The only button I see on a profile is the 'Follow' button and it's there automatically. I'm rather sure there isn't a 'Vote' button on the profile page for a user. You can only 'Vote' up or down hubs. On HubPages 'Following' is the same as being someones friend on other web sites, like Facebook.
I was new here when I wrote this 1.5 years ago. I'm not so new anymore. :)

Very informative. I've bookmarked this so I can go back and read it again. I like to follow talented people who write good quality Hubs, because I can learn a lot from them. I have made so many good, new friends here in Hubland. It's becoming a full time job just to keep up with my friends and their Hubs, not to mention the new folks I want to read.

I'm new to Hub writing-just completed my first 30/30 challenge. I intend to go back and improve on those hubs and become more familiar with HubPages and other writers. I definitely enjoyed reading this hub because not only does it help me with attaining more followers, but I liked the evidence of its effectiveness that you portray. Not only did you start this with 20 followers, but a month later you had 70 and as I write this comment you have an amazing 300! That is incredible! I will definitely have to employ these tips in my own Hubbing and actions on here. Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment Atlas Sue. I guess 300+ followers for only 21 published hubs is pretty good. I can only imagine where I would be at if I had of been more active here over the past 2 years.
In hindsight I think writing on topics with mass appeal and trying really hard to do your best when creating a new hub does more to gain followers than anything else I mentioned here.
This hub has more comments than any of my other hubs, even my hubs that get 2,000+ times more views. I guess that makes sense since I encourage the readers to leave comments, within reason... LOL
I really care more about getting more views to my hubs than followers. My next goal is 1,000,000 views and I'm only slightly past the 250,000 mark.
Judging from what you have already accomplished with what you call a lack of activity over the last two years, your next task of over 1,000,000 views sounds quite attainable. Good luck with it! I know I'll certainly be referring back to this hub every now and then to see if I can't add a couple followers to my...measly...6 lol
